Pia Forsgren, Artistic Director of The Jewish Theatre
She was working as a director at Dramaten in Stockholm when Robert Weil asked her to come to The Jewish Theatre which was restarted in 1997 in its own premises on Djurgården. From being run as a foundation, with performances in rented venues, the Jewish Theatre now became a privately financed company with its own stage. A few trial productions were staged, but then Pia Forsgren and the producer Yvonne Rock officially opened the new theatre with The Night Reads Stars [Natten läser stjärnor] in spring 1997.
The mission of The Jewish Theatre includes giving scope for a Jewish perspective on performance art, and to developing the physical/technical potential of performances on stage. Pia Forsgren’s interest in contemporary cultural expression and strong inclination for experiment and exploration of the theatrical space have been manifested in several first performances of Swedish drama and a powerful visual idiom.
