Film season 2001; Jewish Woman
Starting on 21 February, the Jewish Theatre threw open its doors for a film season on the theme of Jewish Woman, with a view to portraying Jewish women in different countries, times and cultures. Some twenty films covered a spectrum from Woody Allen’s stereotypes to contemporary Jewish rebels, and the genres ranged from feature films to documentaries.
What does it mean to be a Jewish woman today? How do contemporary Jewish women relate to a traditional and mythical concept such as the Jewish Mother? Jewish feminist or feminist Jewess, is there a difference? Is it possible to be a lesbian Jewess? What role do Jewish women play in the Middle East? How do orthodox Jewish women live? What unites the world’s Jewish women, do they have anything in common?
The lobby showed an exhibition by Channa Bankier: Mother and I.
