October 23rd at The Jewish Theatre

The Jewish Theatre is making a broad commitment to one of the most prominent, most played and most controversial playwright Israel ever had: the peace activist Hanoch Levin (1943-1999). Icon in his country – unknown in Scandinavia. His oeuvre spans prose, poetry, some fifty plays – satirical, comic, tragic, mythological – often in a crossover mix. Hanoch Levin’s work is still performed throughout Israel.

The Jewish Theatre is presenting a panel discussion offering insight into a range of diverse yet connected aspects of biography and career of Hanoch Levin. Special guests from Israel are invited to share their experience and expertise, often gained through close working and personal relationships with Levin himself. The tribute will feature live readings and a rare video recording of the short first and last interview that Hanoch Levin, who refused during his life to be interviewed, ever gave.

We all think: it won’t happen to me. The misfortune won’t happen to me. The most dreadful thing won’t happen to me. Not me. But if it happened. If you suddenly lost everything you had. Your house and home, your children, money, friends, clothes, food. And if, on top of this, you were afflicted with a terrible itch. An itch that made you howl like a wild animal and writhe on the ground in hellish torment. And if a soldier from an alien power forced you to choose between renouncing everything you believed in or be impaled on a stake.
If it happened. Would you still claim that it wasn’t happening? Wasn’t happening to you?

The fifth Cikada Prize will be awarded to the Korean poet Moon Chung-hee. The Prize is given to an East Asian poet who “in his/her poems defends the inviolability of life”.

The Cikada Prize was founded in 2004 in connection with the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Swedish Nobel Prize laureate in literature 1974, Harry Martinson. The name of the Prize was inspired by Harry Martinson’s book “Cikada”, which was published in 1953.

The Prize was handed over to Ms. Moon Chung-hee by the Swedish Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.

Ms Moon’s poets have been translated into English, Germany and Albanian. Spanish and French translation will be published in 2011.
